Choosing a time indicator starts with a simple question:
What exactly are you trying to time?
It sounds obvious.
But selecting an indicator based only on duration can lead to the wrong solution.
Two applications may both require a three-month indicator while having completely different requirements.
One might track a filter replacement interval.
Another might track time since a product was opened.
The monitoring duration is only part of the application.
Before selecting a visual time indicator, consider what starts the clock, how long you need to monitor, what happens when the interval ends, where the indicator will be installed, and the conditions it will experience.

Step 1: Determine What Starts the Clock
Every elapsed-time monitoring application needs a defined starting point.
Examples include:
Installing a filter
Opening a product
Replacing a component
Completing maintenance
Preparing a material
Beginning a service period
Activating a product
The indicator should generally be activated when the relevant monitoring interval begins.
This creates a clear relationship between the physical event and the visual monitoring period.
Step 2: Determine the Required Monitoring Duration
Next, determine how much elapsed time matters.
The appropriate interval depends entirely on the application.
You might need to monitor:
Days | Weeks | Months
The goal isn’t simply to choose the closest available duration.
The monitoring period should correspond to the actual replacement, service, inspection, or use requirement established for the application.
For example, if a filter manufacturer’s procedure specifies a particular replacement interval, the monitoring strategy should be built around that requirement—not an arbitrary indicator duration.
Step 3: Determine What Happens When the Interval Ends
This is one of the most overlooked questions.
What is someone supposed to do when the indicator reaches the end of its monitoring period?
Possible actions include:
Replace the item
Inspect the equipment
Perform maintenance
Service a component
Discard a product
Reorder a consumable
Escalate for further evaluation
An indicator is most useful when the organization has a clear action associated with its visual indication.
The device communicates elapsed time.
Your process determines what that elapsed time means.
Step 4: Consider Where the Indicator Will Be Used
The physical location matters.
Will the indicator be placed on:
A filter?
A machine?
A cartridge?
A container?
A replaceable component?
Packaging?
A medical or laboratory product?
A piece of facility equipment?
Point-of-use monitoring works because the information is positioned where personnel need it.
Think about who will inspect the indicator and where they will naturally encounter it.
Step 5: Consider the Operating Environment
The monitoring duration isn’t the only specification that matters.
Consider the environment in which the indicator will operate.
Depending on the application, factors could include:
Operating temperature
Storage conditions
Surface and mounting location
Indoor or field use
Exposure to handling
Product-specific requirements
Always evaluate the selected indicator against the manufacturer’s specifications and your organization’s applicable procedures.
Step 6: Decide Whether You Actually Need Electronic Data
This can dramatically simplify the selection process.
Ask:
Do I need a complete electronic record, or do I need a visual indication?
If the application requires downloadable histories, remote alerts, electronic records, or detailed event data, an electronic monitoring system may be more appropriate.
But many applications don’t require that level of information.
A maintenance technician changing a filter may simply need to know whether the replacement interval has elapsed.
A user may simply need to know whether a defined use period is complete.
For those applications, a visual indicator can provide the necessary information without adding batteries, software, readers, or another digital system.
Step 7: Match the Indicator to the Application
Once you’ve established the requirements, you can begin comparing specific Timestrip® solutions.

Required duration
Starting event
Required visual indication
Installation location
Operating conditions
Action at completion

Example: Filter Replacement
Suppose a facility wants a better way to communicate when HVAC filters should be changed.
Start with the established replacement procedure.
Then determine:
When is the new filter installed?
That becomes the activation point.
What is the established replacement interval?
That determines the monitoring duration.
Where should the indicator be positioned?
Ideally somewhere visible during normal inspection or service.
What happens when the interval is complete?
Inspect or replace the filter according to the organization’s maintenance procedure.
Now the indicator has a defined purpose within the process.

Example: Time Since Opening
Now consider a product with a defined period of use after opening.
The process may be:
Open product → Activate indicator → Use product → Visually monitor elapsed time → Follow established procedure when interval is complete
Same basic technology.
Completely different application.
That’s why application selection matters.
